War of words for Wagga women

rachel4 February 2008

Wagga Wagga women Rachel Viski and Karla McCormack will represent Wagga Toastmasters this weekend in an International Speech and Evaluation Competition to be held in Holbrook.

They will compete against club members from Albury Toastmasters to vie for a spot in the Area Competition which will be held in Canberra next month. Winners will progress through consecutive stages to compete at international level.

25 year old Rachel says she is excited about the opportunity to represent her club.

"This is my third year as a member and I love it!" she said. "Toastmasters is an extremely supportive, encouraging and enduring club. Every meeting hurls you out of your comfort zone, but it's the feeling of accomplishment you get afterwards that keeps you coming back for more."

Other members of the club are travelling to Holbrook to support Rachel on the day and some will participate in the evaluation part of the competition.

“Evaluating speakers is also an important skill developed at Toastmaster meetings,” explains Club President Peter Veerhuis. “Evaluations provide important feedback to speakers about what they’re doing right and where there might be room for improvement.”

The International Speech and Evaluation Contest also coincides with a Toastmasters Training Day.

“Some club members will be attending a training day after the competition, so it’s really going to be an extremely exciting and busy day,” added Mr Veerhuis.

Wagga Wagga Toastmasters meets every second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 6:50 pm to 9:00pm at the Wagga Rules Club. Visitors are welcome. For more information call Colin Davis on 6928 5519.
